My name is Bill Leach. I was born and brought up in Oldham, Lancashire, and moved to Sheffield to attend Sheffield University where I gained a BA (Hons) degree in Business Studies. I stayed in Sheffield for about 26 years.
After graduation I worked for Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, which was an ideal introduction to Sheffield's economic, industrial and commercial scene.
After three years an opportunity arose at Sheffield University's Octagon Centre, an 1,100 seat venue used for concerts, conferences, exhibitions - a wide range of events of all kinds. Six years of large scale event management led to some even larger event management with the opening of Sheffield's new 12,000 seat arena. I worked at Sheffield Arena during the final stages of building, and on the Royal Opening and launch concerts. I also helped to organise the Closing Ceremony for the World Student Games in Sheffield.
I returned to the Chamber of Commerce to promote the Management Charter Initiative and Management Development, and then to Sheffield Training and Enterprise Council to continue promoting MCI alongside NVQs and Investors in People to the Sheffield business community.
Having advised businesses, I then took the plunge in to self employment as a freelance events manager, also working on PR and marketing projects for a variety of clients. An opportunity arose at the new Magna Science Adventure Centre, working on marketing and promotional activities to establish the brand in the final year of construction and then developing the Corporate Hospitality and Events side of the business.
One of the potential events I worked on at Magna was the possibility of operating helicopter pleasure flights and tours from Magna's grounds. This led to my helicopter career, working in an operational and promotional role for Dragon Helicopters at Sheffield City Airport. After this I worked variously for Total Air Management Services, Alpha Helicopters and Kuki Helicopters before leaving Sheffield to start working for Elite Helicopters at Goodwood, Chichester.
Over the years I have also worked on short term contracts at the South Yorkshire Crown Prosecution Service and Westfield Contributory Health Scheme in Sheffield.
Out of hours, I was an active member of the Sheffield Junior Chamber of Commerce (now known as JCI Sheffield) for 13 years, and I am an active member of Arun Speakers Club in Chichester, a public speaking club affiliated to Toastmasters International.
